Exams and problem solving - twilight session THIS THURSDAY

Dear Y13 Physicists,

We are very lucky to have a lecturer and tutor from Oxford Uni running a session on problem solving and exam technique this Thursday (18th May) from 3-4pm.

This session will give you more opportunities to practice exam questions, and will also look at strategies for when you don't know what to do in exams!

this is optional, but highly recommended.

Photoelec HW for Friday

The discovery of photoelectricity and subsequent investigations led to the wave theory of light being replaced by the photon theory. State three features of photoelectricity that could not be explained using the wave theory of light and describe how it is explained using photon theory.

13b HW for Monday

who is this?
His greatest work was to fundamentally change our view of reality, so much so that Albert Einstein said, “One scientific epoch ended and another began with (this man)”.
He expressed all the existing laws of electromagnetism in four differential equations.
These exemplify the holy grail of Physics – a self consistent, powerful theory that can be written in four lines of mathematics.

This theory predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves and provided the tools to create the technological age, from radio to mobile phones.

Work for 13b from Ms H Friday - no lesson

Dear Y13
I think I saw almost all of you - Donald and Asam need to collect spec rel questions from in front of my computer.
All of you need to read about what happens to mass at high speeds and make notes, then do questions.
Thanks
Ms H

Work for Friday Y13b

The link below takes you to a version of the AQA textbook for Turning Points section 3 - Special Relativity. Please use this and your own textbook to read about absolute motion and the  Michelson Morley experiment, make notes on what they did, what they tried to prove and why their null result was significant, plus answer the questions on page 6.  You will get a printed copy of this next week.

Thanks and see you next week

Y13 work for Ms Hamnett - no lessons Monday or Tuesday

Dear Year 13
I am really sorry but I am unwell and have bronchitis so there are no lessons at the start of this week and possibly not till next week.  I am setting a bit of cover work now so that we don't fall behind and I will add more here later this week if needed.
Introduction to special relativity
1. Read the first section on this in your text books and start to make notes on the two postulates (don't worry, it will all make sense in the end!)
2. Watch the great relativity show linked here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mi_exSXi0xI several times and make notes on what it claims
3. Read more about the idea of a light clock (referred to in the video) and draw a labelled diagram explaining what it is (it is a sort of thought experiment to exaplin some observations)
4. Finally, read  through the first few thought experiments linked here http://aether.lbl.gov/www/classes/p139/exp/gedanken.html and make notes on what they show.
Your head will probably hurt, don't worry that is perfectly normal.  All will become clear!
Thanks
Ms H

Mock exam info for both Physics groups

Dear Physics
We have decided to limit what you need to revise for the mocks, and although there will be a few random multiple choice questions and some synoptic bits, the main topics covered will be;
Particles (not quantum)
Electricity
Fields and Capacitors (not magnetic fields)
Further mechanics - SHM, circular motion
Therefore this is what you should focus your revision on. The paper is 2 hours long and contains about 25 multiple choice questions.
13b Monday 6th Feb
13d Wednesday 8th Feb
Thanks
Ms H

13b cover work for Friday

Dear Y13
Your work is to complete the LHC work from the previous blog post, and also to start revising for your mock exam. Please bring evidence of at least 3 hours revision on Particles to our next lesson on Friday.

Y13 LHC work for Friday

lWatch the simulation and then write a half a page with illustrations explaining how charged particles can be accelerated in a circular path and then collided, using your knowledge of electric and magnetic fields.

lUse the words joule, volt, electric field, perpendicular, velocity, magnetic field.
