Year 13 EMPA practice results

Dear Y13
The EMPA written paper dates are as follows;
Weds 4 May  AS EMPA written paper
Mon 9 May  A2 written paper
Here are links to results documents for each of the EMPA selection questions I have given you - fill these onto your paper copies/ draw out a correct results table as appropriate and answer the exam questions I gave out too.
We will be marking the EMPA questions in class after Easter, so please make sure you have completed them all including graphs, tables etc to the best of your ability.
We will also do a practice EMPA practical after Easter, and work on predicted questions for your real EMPA once you have done the practical
If you have any questions, please email me cha@cheney.oxon.sch.uk

There will be plenty of holiday and EMPA prep work posted here over the next week, including the results to use for your practice EMPA - in the meantime, please do the questions on the previous post on theories of light, and go through the section on wave particle duality on the turning points website, listed under the discovery of the electron two posts ago - read through the relevant web pages on theorise of light, discovery of radio waves and microscopes, making notes and answering all questions ( you can check your own answers on the site)

Turning points - Theories of light exam questions

Answer the following
1. State two differences between Newton’s theory of light and that of Huygens.(2)
2.Explain with the aid of a diagram how Newton explained the refraction of a light ray when the light ray passes from air into glass.(2)
3. Describe the fringe pattern observed in Young’s double slits experiment and explain why it could not be explained using Newton’s theory of light.(3)
4. Use the wave theory of light to explain the formation of the interference fringes.(3)
5. State one reason why Newton’s theory of light was accepted in preference to Huygens’ theory.(1)
6. Give one reason why the wave theory of light was not accepted immediately after Young first demonstrated that interference is a property of light (1)

Specific charge of the electron explained

Dear Y13
The link below gives a full and comprehensive explanation of how Thomson worked out e/m - use this to make notes on what we were attempting to do on Friday and we will pick up any remaining issues next lesson.  Remember that you only need to be able to describe one method of doing this.

Also have a go at the questions throughout the text as they will develop your understanding, and have answers as well.
Thanks
Ms H
