TP questions

1.Give one reason why Huygens’ wave theory of light did not replace Newton’s theory of light when the fringe pattern due to double slits was first observed. (1)
2.The interference fringe pattern observed by M’n’M on their interferometer did not shift when the apparatus was rotated by 90°. Explain the significance of this null observation. (1)
3.   Discuss the significance of Einstein’s explanation of the photoelectric effect. (2)
4.   Millikan found that the charge on an oil droplet was always in multiples of e. Explain the significance of this result. (1)

homework

For each of the following, explain in one sentence what it contributes to the wave particle “debate”
Electron diffraction
Young’s double slit experiment
Photoelectricity
Refraction of light

The nature of electromagnetic radiation
De Broglie
Microscopes HW
You need to have an understanding of the working of the transmission electron microscope and the scanning tunnelling microscope
Use the black books/ the internet to compare the workings of these two  types with the traditional light microscope.

Use headings such as; source of rays, transmission of rays, how image is focussed, how image is produced, resolution, specimen preparation

Work for Y13

Dear Y13
Sorry for missing the lesson yesterday.  Your papers are available to collect from Dr Pontecorvi's room, please come and find him or me to collect your paper tomorrow.
Work set for this week;

  • Check through your paper and correct your 3 worst questions on the long answer paper.
  • Write a perfect answer for Q3 (long answer q)
  • 13b and Ayman- do a "if only I'd known" analysis for each question - what would have gained you marks if you had remembered, or done it right?
  • Set yourself a target task arising from this which you will do over the next two weeks
  • ALL - Research Millikan's oil drop experiment - what did he do, outline the experiment and it was s significant "turning point" in Physics
Thanks and sorry again
